Get to Know Your Twitter Timeline

A huge part of successful social media marketing is understanding how the algorithms of the various platforms work. Today, we are going to take a look at the Twitter Timeline and how marketers can make the most of it to expand their reach on the social media platform.

How Does the Twitter Timeline Algorithm Work?

One important thing to remember about the Twitter timeline algorithm is that it’s in a constant state of change! It changes on a weekly, and even daily basis as new tests are run to determine the best metrics. However, where Twitter differs from other social media marketing platforms like Facebook is that it does not rely on a fully algorithm governed timeline. Twitter has pledged to remain live and real-time. With that being said, the timeline consists of three main sections:

  • Ranked Tweets
  • In Case You Missed It
  • Remaining Tweets

Based on various factors including relevancy, content, overall engagement and past interactions with the author, the algorithm will determine which tweets are most engaging and place them either in the Ranked Tweets or the In Case You Missed It section of the timeline. Recent tweets go to Ranked Tweets, and older ones go in the In Case You Missed It section. The remaining tweets will then be served up in reverse chronological order – newest to oldest.

Increasing Your Twitter Reach

As with most social media marketing platforms, one of the key factors in the Twitter Timeline algorithm is engagement. The more interaction tweets have, the higher they rank on follower timelines, and they may even be shown to non-followers. This causes something of a ripple effect and allows the most popular tweets to be more widely seen. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how the Twitter timeline algorithm can be used to increase reach and take your social media marketing strategy to the next level.

1 – Recycle Your Most Popular Posts

When it comes to content marketing, it has been drummed into us all that fresh and unique is the way to go. However, social media marketing is slightly different. On Twitter especially, it is acceptable to tweet the same content more than once. The key is choosing a top tweet since the Twitter algorithm will help popular posts travel further. Of course, fresh content is still a must, but extra mileage can certainly be squeezed from popular posts by retweeting them regularly.

2 – Post Video Content

Videos are one of the most engaging types of content in social media marketing. If you are not already posting videos on Twitter, then it’s time to start! Video content is six times more likely to be retweeted than a photograph. For the best results upload video content natively to Twitter rather than sharing a YouTube link.

3 – Find Your Optimum Posting Schedule

While some tweets are ranked according to the new timeline algorithm, for the most part, they will be shown in reverse chronological order. What does this mean for your social media marketing strategy? It means that when you post on twitter is still important. Experiment with posting times to find the sweet spot with the most engagement.

4 – Choose Hashtags Wisely

Hashtags have become an important part of all social media marketing, but don’t forget they originated on Twitter. Creating a branded hashtag tied to your brand is one of the most effective ways to use hashtags.
